A Special Announcement by Vercingetorix

Ladies and Gentlemen, a very special announcement is now here, so getcha popcorn ready and relax......

Somewhere far away, in the not-to-distant future.............

The boy walked the quiet streets of his old neighborhood, alone. He knew that he was eighteen years old now and technically a man, but he sure didn't feel differently than before. To him, he was still a boy, the twisted creation that occurred when had Fate spun the wheel and the hand pointed straight at him. He stopped to pause for a moment outside of a familiar house, the one that he had called home for fifteen years. It looked the same, much as its occupants had been the same through the years.

"They were wrong to imprison me," he thought aloud as he stared down the old house, "but perhaps their choice was the right one. If I had stayed with them, none of this would have ever happened. I'd be a normal person doing normal things. Who am I today but a hero past his due who has already had his fifteen minutes of fame? WHO?!?!?" A starling squawked the the nearby bushes at this disturbance, but otherwise the neighborhood was quiet. A gentle, crisp breeze started to blow, as if to cleanse the boy's head of his teenage angst.

They all had called him a name once, and once upon a year ago he had been the savior of his people. He was known far and wide as The Boy Who Lived, the one person out of thousands who was able to match wits and wands with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. To Harry on this day, however, that felt like a lifetime ago. It was quite special how the tides of life could sweep him out to sea, he thought, but ultimately he would end up on the same rocky beach as all of the other folks out there who had tried to make names for themselves. Today he was nothing but a washed-up has been, barely able to hold down a desk job at Gringott's. and living in a humble apartment not unlike his old hovel at the Durseley's, whose residence stood in front of him. Of course, Ron and Hermione had tried to help him out, but as all friends eventually do they went their separate ways. They were already talking about getting married, while Harry Potter himself was barely on speaking terms with his own girlfriend Ginny Weasley.

That wasn't the worst of it all, however. Against all odds, the scar had been burning up again for the past several weeks. Harry thought that he had quieted the mark for good with his victory over Voldemort, but the searing pain had now returned, worse than ever before.. As Harry Potter prepared to board his broomstick for home, he paused to reflect on his future- he had done well to rise from practically nothing to the Boy Hero of the wizarding world, but the fall from grace had been even faster. What he knew for sure was that telling by the dreams he had been having recently, his struggles were far from over....

_______________________________________________________

He was probably the best there ever was by now, but the strapping young man wasn't quite satisfied with himself yet. It had been six long years since he had begun the journey of a lifetime at the age of ten and a half, but to him it felt much longer than that. Over the years, he had laughed, cried, and walked for countless miles to every possible location with his friends, and now it seemed that his quest was finally over. They called him a Pokemon Master, but considering that he was still barely old enough to drive, Ash Ketchum didn't think that the title stuck to him yet. He knew that fame could be fleeting, anyway, as he had seen from the boy he had just defeated for the crown.

Paul was his name, and Ash had known and battled him for years. They didn't like each other and they never had, but by this point at least Paul had the humbleness to shake his hand and congratulate him for the victory. As the trophy was passed to him and he watched as his name and those of his pokemon were put into the Pokemon Hall of Fame, Ash couldn't prevent a lone thought from entering his mind:

"Is this really the point of it all?"

Suddenly, Ash felt his shoulder being grabbed through the streaming confetti by an eccentric reporter. At first glance Ash had thought it was James of Team Rocket, but then he remembered that him and Jessie had been put out of business long ago- it seemed that boss Giovanni's patience was able to run out after all, and the duo retired to the Sevii Islands, thankfully taking that annoying cat with them.

The announcer jabbed on: "So, as the youngest ever Unova League Champion, what are your plans for defending the crown? We all know how Barry has been gunning for you!"

The audience roared, but Ash wasn't concerned with them for the moment. He paused for a second and then replied, "Hard work and my friendship with Pikachu have finally paid off, and I'll try to unify the Kanto Championship with this one next!" Ash knew that Lance the Dragon Master was by this point the strongest trainer in the country and possibly the world, so he would have to train hard first- and that meant scaling Mount Silver as he had done through the years. After a few days of good workout, Ash figured, his family and friends at home in Pallet Town would be eager to see him. He hadn't seen his mother Delia or friends Brock, Misty, May, Dawn, or even his famous friend and rival Gary Mutherf***ing Oak in the longest time.....

______________________________

The Boy Who Lived was indeed afraid, very afraid now. The dreams were getting more vivid by the day, and the scar never stopped its searing, intolerable pain. Harry had tried to sleep, but by this point his goal was to stop from becoming insane by what he saw every minute of the night. The nightmares were blurry at first, but with every passing night he could see the atrocities committed. First it was the usual images of Wizarding folk getting killed on the street, but then something unusual happened- the scenes started to portray lands that he had never before seen, and some of the victims even tried to use their pets against the demon. The creatures were peculiar in that they used magical abilities yet they were totally under the command of their Muggle masters. Yet every time the result was the same- the flash of green light, the excruciating pain, the roar of triumph- and whatever the monster's identity, it was getting stronger all the time.

Harry woke up with a scream- "Why the bloody hell do I have to suffer like this, Albus!?!? Voldemort is dead!!!!!" He quickly realized that the only parental figure he had ever had was gone as well, and had been for over two years now. Sirius was dead too, and the demises of those two continued to haunt the boy wizard to that fearful night.  Harry was truly alone now, and whatever the new enemy was he would have no choice but to fight it by himself. Considering that Harry Potter would have been killed many times over without help from his best friends, he was understandably shaken by this fearful new prospect. The thought came at him from all sides, and it wouldn't go away:

"I am alone, and nobody is around to help."

By all accounts, at the end of that night Harry Potter wished that he was indeed alone, for after he drifted into sleep once more the worst nightmare he had ever had made itself known........
__________________________

They flew swiftly yet quietly through the cold night air, the goal was apparent but the target was not. They didn't need a target, anyway- the goal was always the same, to kill everyone that They could find, and sacrifice the energy of the deceased to the ultimate goal. When that was achieved they could rule the world, the galaxy, the universe. The targets didn't matter- in fact, the more innocent and vulnerable the better. The heavy dark robes gave them the appearance of Grim Reapers, and to an extent They saw Themselves as such. There was more to Them, though, just than that- They came quickly as the falcon and vicious as the bear, yet also as cunning as the Snake, and the Green Skull would soon reveal itself throughout every town and city in the world.....

They were everywhere.

They couldn't be stopped.

They would decide who lived and who died.

Everyone would know Their name and tremble in fright.

The world would never be the same.....

Their leader signaled the landing point, and as if by clockwork timing his pack of five robed figures lowered their brooms and swooped effortlessly toward the ground. It was a peaceful town below, they didn't deserve the treatment of the Green Skull.

"But nobody ever does....," their leader muttered in a sarcastic tone to a blond-haired underling. The Leader had the appearance of a teenager, but he was in fact centuries older than any of the others. His pale, stoic features and black hair pierced the  shadows of his long hood, and he directed the others to disembark. He had heard of one with the heart of a lion here, who had seen and defeated even more challenges than had the old enemy. "His soul will be useful to me, quite useful.....," the boy hissed in a menacing tone that belied his innocent appearance. His robe concealed an old book with a hole in it, one which just beckoned for a repair......

The town was massacred, and most of its residents were slain. They ransacked every house looking for the target, and green flashes pierced the calm night. A few of the panicked and horrified people had escaped, but many stood their ground and tried to do combat with their pets as Their Leader had seen before. They were dispatched one by one, until the houses and shops were set ablaze. The Leader loved to see destruction by fire, by this point his own soul had been twisted and split so many times that he had not a shred of empathy left for anything, including himself. The sight reminded him of that from a few years ago, but that phoenix rose from the ashes- He would make sure that that was not the case here.

At His command, They set fire to the last building on top of the hill, a grey boxy structure with many antennae at the top. None of them understood Muggle technology, and particularly not that of the people of this strange land, but They didn't care about the fools or their pathetic devices anyway. Many of the civilians who had survived the initial purge had fled here, so the Leader himself made the grand entrance this time.

As expected, there were some attacks from the pets and some of those even shook Him up a little bit, but they were ultimately of no use. The first one to go was the old man, who wore a lab coat and demanded to face the Leader in person. After he was obliged, next came a young woman in a short red shirt- she was tougher, but no match for the green flash. As she fell, another teen, this time a boy with reddish-brown hair leapt and attempted to tackle the Leader. The Leader was hard-pressed to dispose of this daring young man, but Gary (someone else had called him that) had earned enough respect to be spared and was simply slammed against the wall and into a coma. After the massacre, only one Muggle was left- an innocent girl who had tried to use a small blue penguin against the group. The Leader contemplated sparing her, too, but He wanted her power to add to his own- that was all that mattered, and each soul harvested added to His chances of becoming whole again. The girl started to cry, but He had seen it all before- eighteen years ago, Harry's parents had done the exact same thing. As he remembered this, a slight grin came to his lips as he uttered the fatal curse:

AVARA KEDAVRA!!!!

They flew away as quickly as they had come, having not found their ultimate target but still determined nonetheless. The work of the Death Eaters was done here.

Harry screamed as he had never done before in his life. If Tom Riddle had risen again, then he was after Harry- or was he? Why would he be thousands of miles away, in a foreign land? His mind raced in dread as he tried to piece together the puzzle, but he knew that only one thing could be done: Harry Potter had to stop Voldemort one more time, and the weight of the world was on his shoulders again.

"Why me???," Harry Potter uttered under his breath as he quietly packed his belongings into a rucksack and mounted his broomstick. "What did I do to deserve this?" Yet again, no answer came. Harry Potter did not know what his powers his newborn adversary possessed this time, but one thing was certain to him:

This time, the entire world is at stake.

Training on Mount Silver had been uneventful for Ash Ketchum, and for a week the boy trainer had practiced with his best pokemon for the duel of a lifetime with Champion Lance. As Ash stood at the frozen summit and prepared to descent into reality, a figure stepped from out of the icy fog-

"I'm here to challenge you...."

The boy was about Ash's age and had similar black hair and brown eyes, but he wore a red hooded sweatshirt in addition to yellow shorts and a hat. Somehow, Ash didn't think this person was just another restless, hormone-fueled young trainer out to prove himself. He had seen too many of those before, and knew the difference when he saw it. With just a second of hesitation, the Pokemon Champion shouted, "Let's go!!!! I choose you, Pikachu!!!!"

The duel was hard-fought, but Ash eventually triumphed and the mysterious boy who Ash got to know as Ethan Gold admitted defeat and climbed back down Mount Silver in as silence as he arrived. Relieved at preserving his good name, Ash prepared to set up camp at the darkening summit of the mountain when he noticed something he had never before quite seen-

A foggy Green Skull the size of several football fields lit up the sky! Before Ash had time to react to this breathtaking sight, his Aura senses were overwhelmed by sensations of despair-

Death had come to Ash Ketchum's world.

Without a second thought, Ash gathered his things, leapt onto Charizard, and flew as fast as he could towards the Green Skull. He neared ever closer, but the anguish he sensed grew to an unbearable level as if begging Ash to ignore the truth of what had happened. Closer and closer and closer, but the truth seemed to disappear as the sun sank into the Western mountain ridges. As if by accident, Ash felt a sensation that was so intense it almost threw him off his fire dragon mount-

It was Gary, the others are dead. The boy in the dark robe. Bright green light. All is lost.

Ash didn't know what to do, he would have cried if he had remembered how to, but never before had life and death seemed so real to him as in the clouds on that cold, lonely night. He had gained everything, but had also lost sight of what really mattered to him. Ash Ketchum was now alone.

As the Green Skull grew ever more vivid to him, Ash Ketchum could only feel one thing-

Rage in his heart. This time, it's personal.

Table of Contents, Recommended Blogs, and Favorite Matchups

Hello everyone,

Since it's been a while I want to refresh you on the matchups I have done until now. My current body of work is rather small, but some of the stuff is hard to find so I'll list it all here in one place.

 And my matches are:

-The Spike Matchup Forum User UBER Battle!

In my first-ever matchup, the most prominent forum users and bloggers from seven months ago square off in a real-life battle to decide who IS the DEADLIEST WRITER!!!!

Seriously though, this was my first attempt at matchups and it shows. Still, it's worth a read if only to see who the big names were at that time. Some you'll recognize, some have been gone for a while and one is writing this right now! It's also an interesting study in how us geeks could arm ourselves if we ever did go into battle. Knives, bows, sticks, wooden shields and other makeshift weapons clash in a six-way fight to the finish, but only one aspiring nerd writer will emerge victorious! By the way, someday I'm going write a sim to this just for kicks, perhaps after Sora vs. Toon Link is done.

-DW Showdown Match 1: Southern Redneck vs. Gangsta Thug!

This match put me on the map for a few reasons as it was one of the first to introduce music, complex characters, and an epilogue to the matchup experience. I actually completed the first draft in just two days, and it shows since the profiles are a bit short and it could use more detail in general. It doesn't hold up great today, but it was well-received at the time and my current plan is to revise it as my second matchup. I actually got the idea for this from another forum poster back when Spike was cool. Those were the good 'ol simple days.......

Anyway, as to the match itself Gangstas vs. Rednecks was what Ninjas vs. Pirates is today before the latter was in vogue. These two pop culture icons both command the respect of different segments of American society, and the time is now to settle their score once and for all. Will the precision shooting and rebel yelling of the Redneck win him the victory, or will the Thug's body armor and high-powered weapons make him the king of the streets once more? Here is where to find out!

DW Showdown Match 2: Chinese Imperial Tang Warrior vs. Japanese Ashigaru Sneak Peek

After the success I experienced with my first match, I decided to go a different route and create a historical matchup featuring some of the two best Warriors in Asian history. The intro to this is as far as I got, but the quality of that is much improved over my previous effort. The reason I stopped this early was because of a combination of lack of interest at the time plus the fact that the Tang Warrior was very difficult to research. Perhaps someday I'll resurrect this, but most likely I'll end up rematching the Ashigaru against an enemy that's easier to research like the Song or Yuan Warrior.

Southern Redneck Revised Warrior Profile

Following my failure with the preceding match, I took a break from blogging to follow what others had to offer at the time. The rapidly improving work of writers such as Sparta, iHonk, Russiasfury, Meibukanman, Marek, and others convinced me that what I had done before would not cut it anymore. With that in mind, I set out to revise my first match with new weapons and tons of additional detail. The Redneck profile I actually completed, and while it's not as impressive as it once was it was very good for the time with tons of information and videos.

Unfortunately, I started this activity as Season 2 ended and interest in DW waned in turn. Overworked and seemingly one of a dying breed, I decided to give up blogging and instead just enjoy the work of others. However, this just didn't feel right to give up on something I enjoyed and so after hearing a podcast featuring iHonk I decided to reenter the game in a big way.......

About Me, and My Writing Philosophy

With a manifesto detailing my goals and how I felt about blogging in general. I decided that if I wanted to continue and be fufilled I needed to change the game and create something different. In this piece I detail my reasons for coming back and also my new writing style which is more or less based off of Monopolyman's but with a few differences.

DW Showdown Match 2: Sora vs. Toon Link!

My current match is the product of all these changes, in that two epic video game heroes with very personal goals will clash until only one is left standing. This actually began as a quickie match to ease myself back into writing, but as with everything else I like to "go big or go home." As of now it has been a month and a half in development (an eon by blogging standards) and though both profiles are over halfway done there is still a long way to go until it's finished. When it finally is done, it will be well worth the wait, trust me.....

Recommended Blogs

There are plenty of other writers out there producing great work, and many are inspirations to myself so I highly suggest checking out their work. What follows is a list of writers whose work I am fond of, as well as my favorite match from each:

iHonk: Also known simply as Mike, this guy was quite simply the best before anyone else even started. His matches emphasize historical detail, so if you are a fan of the strict DW ancient battle formula you'll be at home here. His innovations are many but they are all important to us who follow in his path. Actually, he was so successful as a blogger that he's now planning his own book!

Favorite Match: iHonk has perhaps the largest body of work of anyone, but if I could only read one of his sims it would be "Norse Warlord vs. Samurai Daimyo." This one is a classic rematch of the famous DW episode, and it expands upon that concept very well with new weapons and tactics for both sides. The sim is characteristic of his writing style, which emphasizes the tactical decisions of the factions' leaders.

Monopolyman: Also known as afanofsparta, he is my main inspiration in terms of writing style and his highly detailed matches set the standard for today's new bloggers. He does a mix of fantasy and ancient matchups and also throws a fair bit of plot intrigue into his simulations. Be warned: while they are highly entertaining, his sims are very long so getcha popcorn ready beforehand! We have traded several ideas for DW matches and though I owe pretty much my entire style to him he also has adopted some of my innovations as well.

Favorite Match: It's very hard to pick here but I can narrow it down to two episodes that struck me as being particularly memorable: Julius Caesar vs. Cao Cao of Wei settles the ultimate question of Rome vs. Han China quite convincingly, and in my mind it has the best plot twists of Sparta's sims. The other one is Byzantine Cataphracts vs. Polish Winged Hussars, quite possibly the best single matchup that anyone has produced to date. This one has it all: great weapons, plenty of history, and a twist ending that I'm still just coming to grips with now.

Marek: Also known as Marek the Warrior, he is a bit younger than the rest of us but he has a long history of producing matches for our entertainment. Most of them are found on his profile on Spike, but he does have a blogspot titled "Making the Cut." He is extremely ambitious and plans a tournament called the King of War that pits history's greatest warriors from six continents against one another. Marek's been on hiatus recently due to business, but I'm an example of how quickly that can change.

Favorite Match: Most of Marek's earlier work is short and to the point, and while it is all of high quality his latest effort called the "Sioux Achictka Warrior Bio" is remarkable for its level of detail, previously  matched only by a few such as Russiasfury, Master of The Boot, iHonk, Sparta, and myself. I certainly hope that he gets around to completing his current match.

MeibukanMaster: This was one person who went under my radar for a good long while. I personally don't know much about his art, but his matches are certainly entertaining enough to be noticed. His style is a mix between iHonk's and Sparta's, and where he excels is in using warriors that nobody has ever heard of before. It certainly makes you feel disappointed in Spike for not using some of these guys in Season 3.

Favorite match: "Scottish Border Raiders vs. Crow Nation" exemplifies what Meibukanmaster is all about in that both sides are exotic and the profiles are informative and easy without being overkill to make you lose interest. This is Meibukan's only simulation on his blog right now, but it is excellent with plenty of personality amongst the characters.

Ares: Formerly known as Areshuls and from the Netherlands, Ares has been a presence on forum boards for a long while now. He does both Historical and fictional battles, and he periodically shares his perspectives on the real show as well. Like myself, his skills as a blogger have increased considerably in recent months.

Favorite Match: Ares' latest work, "Ramesses II vs. Xerxes I" is clearly his best as it represents the latest in his development as a blogger. Two of the Bronze Age's best generals are compared here, with direct comparisons of Persian and Egyptian gear that are illustrated with some fascinating videos. The sim is excellent as well, portraying a chariot battle between the two leaders.

Master of the Boot: Apparently this guy has been doing matches for quite a long time, but I only stumbled upon his work recently. He takes a different approach than most others, sticking strictly to the show's format and making each episode feel like an episode of the show. He is very dedicated and his matchups are quite long, even more so than Sparta's, but they keep things entertaining with witty dialogue between the experts and the hosts as well as videos. I'll be honest with you all in saying that I haven't even skimmed the surface of what Master of the Boot has put out, but I'm already amazed by what I have.

Favorite Match: Like I stated, I don't have much experience reading Master of The Boot's work so I'll recommend one I have read, "Sarah Kerrigan vs. Anakin Skywalker". This match pits the famous pretty-boy turned evil Sith lord against the Queen Bitch of the Universe from Starcraft II. This is one match you'll have to read to believe since it is so unique from everything else out there (yes, Sparta has done the same match but I'm talking about the style).

Northern Dancing Guy: Don't let the odd name put you off, he is a rising star in the small DW blogging community and he has the matches to show for it. Also known as Warrior Song, he has taken a slightly different approach to blogging in that he has introduced the element of comedy into his page. His Comedy Cats pages are welcome diversions from the seriousness of DW, and he also has an expansive library of normal matches as well.

Favorite Match: I'd have to take his latest work, "Rough Riders vs. Boer Commandos" as my favorite since it contains a lot of useful information about two warrior cultures that were similar and contempraneous yet never fought one another. Song's weapon descriptions shine here as they incluse a tale of the tape type information setup. The allies and enemies sections are also very well written.

Rikun: Someone that's new around here, his match is "Untouchables vs. Nazi Gestapo." It's pretty good so far, and it reminds me somewhat of my own Redneck vs. Gangsta match in terms of style. Check it out and support other new bloggers!

Those are my recommended and favorite blogs, but before I leave I want to highlight another writer whose work I have not read: DaRaginCajun. He has been active for a while, but I haven't had the time to check out his work. I'll update this appropriately when that changes.

Until next time, check out my update log for more news on Sora vs. Toon Link!

Thanks for reading,
